Washington resident Daniel Teitjen Schellhorn died of cancer Tuesday, April 22. He was 62.
Schellhorn was born on Oct. 29, 1945, and raised in New Jersey. He moved to Washington in 1963 to attend George Washington University, and eventually became the co-owner and general manager of Swift Mailing Service, according to his friend Albert N. Hutchings. During this time, he worked with Steve Endean of the Gay Rights National Lobby to develop a direct mail campaign, and continued to work with Endean as the latter began to form the Human Rights Campaign Fund.
Schellhorn sold his business in 1989 and returned to school to get his undergraduate degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of the District of Columbia in 1993.
Schellhorn also had an ongoing relationship with the local Metropolitan Community Church and the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, having joined in 1979. He had served on the board of directors and the clergy training leadership programs, among other duties, and also served on the board of directors of the Northwest Settlement House and the Lancaster Theological Institute in Lancaster, Pa.
Schellhorn is survived by his brother John; sisters Deborah, Virginia and Mary; two nephews, Joseph and David Luptak; as well as other nieces, nephews and family members.
Schellhorn’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17, at the Metropolitan Community Church of Washington, 474 Ridge St., NW, 20001, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 West James St., Lancaster, Pa., 17603.
