Rehoboth’s Blue Moon takes over Cobalt for one night
For those that have yet to experience the Blue Moon, it is located less than two blocks from the ocean in Rehoboth Beach, Del., and is home to one of the most popular gay bars and best restaurants in the area.
It’s currently off season, so the owners of the Blue Moon have decided to pack up and bring a bit of Rehoboth to D.C.
Cobalt, located at 1639 R St., N.W., will be taken over Sunday, Jan. 31, for a night of dancing, singing and Blue Moon bartenders. The Blue Moon has been a favorite of many D.C. vacationers for nearly 30 years, so bringing the beach to D.C. during the cold of January seemed a no-brainer.
As a longtime patron of Blue Moon, Cobalt’s Mark Rutstein knew a takeover event was a must and the idea for the cooperative venture was born. The Blue Moon’s Tim Ragan was enthusiastic about the event and admits the meeting of the minds took about “five seconds” because it was such an appropriate fit. The Sunday Tea Dance has been popular with the D.C. clientele at Blue Moon, with each dance consisting of a different theme, from dog tags to disco.
The theme for the takeover at Cobalt is going to be beach in nature and the hostess for the evening will be the fabulous Mona Lotts. Another treat will be the much-loved recording artist Pamela Stanley, who is a staple of Blue Moon’s Sunday Tea Dance. Stanley first gained attention with the title track from her debut album, “This Is Hot,” which shot up to #13 on the Billboard Dance Charts. Attendees of the 2006 White Party will undoubtedly recall Stanley’s performance as it has been touted as one of her most popular.
Along with Cobalt’s always hot and friendly staff, some of Blue Moon’s own hunky bartenders will be working. Stanley will perform two one-hour sets that will include some of her high-energy hits plus some of her newer songs. There are also surprises in store.
The festivities will begin at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, and last until closing. Expect a $5 cover charge at the door and a dance floor packed with fans of both Cobalt and Blue Moon. For more information on Blue Moon visit bluemoonrehoboth.com.
