Amandla Stenberg, who played Rue in the first “Hunger Games”, announced she is bisexual last week.

Stenberg revealed the news in a video while promoting her February cover for Teen VogueĀ on the magazine’s official Snapchat account. She also posted the video on her personal Tumblr page.

ā€œItā€™s a really, really hard thing to be silenced and itā€™s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldnā€™t in,” the 17-year-old says in the video. “As someone who identifies as a black, bisexual woman, Iā€™ve been through it and it hurts and itā€™s awkward and itā€™s uncomfortable.ā€

Stenberg says she decided to be truthful about her identity after a few of her celebrity friends helped her along.

“But then I realized because of Solange [Knowles] and Ava DuVernay and Willow [Smith] and all the black girls watching this right now, that thereā€™s absolutely nothing to change,” Stenberg went on.

ā€œWe cannot be suppressed. We are meant to express our joy and our love and our tears, and be big and bold and definitely not easy to swallow,ā€ Stenberg continued. ā€œI definitely believe in the concept of rebellion through selfhood, and rebellion by embracing your true identity no matter what youā€™re being told.ā€
