Mya Taylor became the first transgender actor to win a major film award on Saturday.

Taylor won Best Supporting Female at the Independent Spirit Awards for her role as Alexandra in “Tangerine.” In her acceptance speech, Taylor brought attention to the lack of transgender actors in film.

ā€œThere is transgender talent. Thereā€™s very beautiful transgender talent,ā€ the 24-year-old actress said. ā€œSo you better get out there and put it in your next movie.ā€

Taylor also said she had no idea the movie would have become a hit since the directors told her they would be shooting on an iPhone.

“This movie ain’t gonna be shit,” Taylor said about her initial thoughts. “But it turned out to be amazing.”
