Mariah Carey to be honored at GLAAD Media Awards

Grammy-winning singer will receive Ally Award

The 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards will honor Mariah Carey with the Ally Award during its New York City ceremony on May 14.

Director Lee Daniels will present Carey with the award at the Waldorf Astoria. Laverne Cox will host the ceremony.

According to GLAAD, the Ally Award is “presented to a media figure who has consistently used their platform to support and advance LGBT equality and acceptance.”

ā€œThrough her music and outspoken support, Mariah Carey has inspired and empowered countless LGBT fans across the globe,ā€ GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. ā€œShe is a longtime ally and friend to the LGBT community who has worked tirelessly to move acceptance and inclusion forward.ā€

Previous honorees include Elizabeth Taylor, Patti LaBelle, Janet Jackson, Russell Simmons and Cher.
