Ellen DeGeneres has responded to accusations she posted a racially charged photo of herself and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Twitter saying being a racist is “the furthest thing from what I am.”

DeGeneres posted a picture of Bolt taken during a 100-meter semifinal on Sunday looking back at his opponents with a smile on his face as he crosses the finish line. In the photo, DeGeneres is riding on his back.Ā “This is how I’m running errands from now on,” DeGeneres captioned the picture. The photo became a meme with different variations of the photo circulating the internet. However, not everyone was amused by the picture.

Some Twitter users felt the image of a white woman riding on the back of a black man was inappropriate and had racial undertones.

“You thought it’d be funny to post a pic of yourself riding on the back of a Black man? Nope. Delete this racist garbage,” one user tweeted.Ā

“So riding on his back like a mule, a horse as some form of property is fun to you…Ok,” tweeted another user.

Others felt the picture was taken too seriously.

“Oh relax, you politically correct babies. @TheEllenShow wasn’t racist. Not everything is racist. Grow up,” read another tweet.Ā

DeGeneres tweeted a response to the backlash on Tuesday saying the picture wasn’t meant to be racist.

ā€œI am highly aware of the racism that exists in our country,ā€ DeGeneres tweeted. ā€œIt is the furthest thing from who I am.ā€
