Britney Spears to be honored with Vanguard Award at GLAAD Media Awards

Britney Spears will receive recognition for her support of the LGBT community with the Vanguard Award at the 29th annual GLAAD Media Awards.

According to GLAAD, the Vanguard Award “is presented to media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people.”

“Honored to be receiving the Vanguard Award at the @GLAAD Media Awards this year! The LGBTQ community means the absolute world to me and inspires me every day. I am proud to be an ally and I will continue to support equality and acceptance for all!!” Spears tweeted on Tuesday.

ā€œAn irrefutable icon, Britney Spears has entertained the world while also embodying the spirit of GLAADā€™s Vanguard Award by speaking out on significant issues that face her fans ā€“ from the Dream Act to anti-transgender bills in Texas,ā€ Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, said in a statement. ā€œShe is a force in the music world who has used her global platform to share messages of love and acceptance, something that the world needs today more than ever.ā€

Past recipients of the Vanguard Award include Cher, Demi Lovato, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Kerry Washington.

The GLAAD Media Awards take place on Thursday, April 12 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
