A TV series is in development about Renaissance genius Leonardo Da Vinci which will portray him as a “gay outsider,” according to Variety.

Italyā€™s RAI and Lux Vide have tapped showrunner Frank Spotnitz (ā€œThe Man in the High Castleā€) and writer Steve Thompson (ā€œSherlockā€) to helm ā€œLeonardo,”Ā an eight-part, English language series.

“He was a real outsider for those times. He was an illegitimate child, gay, vegetarian and left-handed,ā€ RAI Head of Drama Eleonora Andreatta says.

The show will be told from the viewpoint of ā€œa girl called Caterina, who was one of his modelsā€ which ā€œwill allow us to get inside his soul and his secrets,ā€ according to Andreatta.

Each episode will focus on one of Da Vinci’s masterpieces but tell the ā€œpersonal and adventurousā€ facets of Da Vinci’s life.

“Leonardo” is expected to air next year to correlate with the 500- year anniversary of Da Vinci’s death.
